When external mono microphones are connected to the stereo input of a portable recorder or other device, they deliver only one single-channel signal. The special wiring of this cable solves the problem. The cable transmits a balanced mono signal to two unbalanced stereo channels, enabling high-end microphones to be used and their signal played back through both channels.
