The Yamaha STJ Silent Brass Personal Studio is the central brain for your Silent Series mute. This technologically advanced system works by silencing your instrument while allowing you to hear yourself playing through headphones. It captures the sound of your instrument with a specially designed mini microphone, optimising the audio quality through Yamaha’s Brass Resonance Modelling technology.

The result is an open, natural sound as if you’re not using a mute at all. With the Personal Studio STJ, you can easily connect to a computer or smart device for recording, online practice sessions, or playing along with your favourite tracks. The include reverb modes and different positioning settings allow for flexibility, immersion, and authenticity in your personal practice or teaching.

Please note: This product requires a Yamaha Silent Mute for brass instruments to work. Batteries are not included.

Brass Resonance Modelling creates natural and authentic sound

The Brass Resonance Modelling technology in the Yamaha Silent Brass system is an innovative feature that enhances your playing experience. This technology works by cancelling out the muted sound of your instrument, allowing it to sound as open and natural as if it were unmuted. The technology processes the sound picked up by the mini microphone, eliminating the ‘closed’ sound that is typically produced when a mute is used. The natural sound that resonates from the bell when the instrument is played without a mute is then added to the mix in your headphones, resulting in a realistic tone that accurately mimics the natural sound of a brass instrument.

As part of this technology, Yamaha has included sound modes that cater to different listening experiences. These include ‘Player’ mode and ‘Audience’ mode. In ‘Player’ mode, Silent Brass adjusts the left-right balance of the sound to match the player’s position, enabling a highly immersive playing experience that simulates the feel of playing the instrument in front of you. ‘Audience’ mode, on the other hand, recreates the sound of your instrument from the perspective of a listener, making it an excellent choice for recording sessions or online lessons.

In addition to these modes, the Silent Brass system also offers built-in reverb control that allows you to recreate the ambience of different playing environments. The reverb effect can simulate the acoustic characteristics of both small practice rooms with minimal reverberation, and large concert halls with rich and dense reverberation. This flexibility enables you to tailor your sound to match any performance space, thereby making your playing feel more authentic and immersive.

Connect to your devices with the Personal Studio

The Personal Studio STJ is equipped with a micro USB port that allows for a seamless connection to computers and smart devices. The convenience of using the provided USB cable to connect the Personal Studio to your desired device greatly simplifies the process, removing the need for additional audio interfaces or complex wiring configurations. An adapter may be required for smartphone connections.

It can be seamlessly connected to Yamaha’s free Rec’n’Share app on smart devices, allowing you to play along with audio tracks stored on your device. Not only that, but it also enables you to record your performance and share it online. The app also includes beneficial features like adjustable playback tempo, an AB repeat function for focused practice on specific sections, and a click track analysis for rhythm assistance. These features make practice more efficient, productive, and enjoyable.
